            successful writers

In 1977 , a dead author of detective stories saved the life of a nineteen-month-old baby in a most unusual way. The author was Agatha Christie, a gentle married lady and one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world.

In June 1977 , a baby girl became seriously ill in Qatar (卡塔爾) , near Sandi Arabia(沙特阿拉伯) . Doctors were unable to find out the cause of her illness, so she was flown to London and sent to Hammersmith Hospital. A team of doctors hurried to examine the baby only to discover that they, too, were puzzled by the very unusual signs of illness. While they were having a discussion about the babys illness, a nurse asked to speak to them.

―Excuse me,‖ said Nurse Marsha Maitland, ―but I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning(鉈中毒) .‖

―What makes you think that?‖ Dr. Brown asked. ―Thallium poisoning is very rare.‖

―A few days ago, I was reading a novel called A Pale Horse by Agatha Christie,‖ Nurse Maitland explained.“In the book, somebody uses thallium poison, and all the signs are exactly the same as the baby s . ”

―You are very careful and you may be right,‖ another doctor said. ―we‘ll carry out some tests and find out whether it s thallium(鉈) or not.‖

Tests showed that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium. Once they knew the cause of the illness, the doctors were able to give the baby the correct treatment. She soon recovered and was sent back to Qatar. Later on it was proved that the poison might have come from an insecticide(殺蟲劑) used in Qatar.

            travel

People bury treasure to stop other people from taking it. They choose a quiet place, dig a deep hole and bury the treasure in it. Then they make a map of where the treasure is or write down other clues(線索)that will help them or someone else to find it again.

In Britain a few years ago; a writer wrote about some treasure that he had buried. He put clues in the story to help readers find it. Thousands of people hunted for the treasure. They dug holes all over Britain, hoping to find it.

One of the most popular adventure stories ever written is Robert Louis Stephensons Treasured Island‘, an exciting story about a young boy, Jim Hawkins, who is captured by pirates and later finds some buried treasure.

Then there is the true story about a man who had to travel overseas for a year. He did not trust banks, so he buried his life savings in a park. Then he went away. On his return, he went straight to the park. But the park was no longer there. In its place there was a huge building.

And then there was the man who buried his savings, all in bank notes, in a waterproof(防水的) bag. When he dug it up years later, there was nothing left. Worms and insects had eaten the bag and everything in it.

And of course, these are stories about people who bury things and either forget where they have buried them or lose the map.

Although it is true that people sometimes lose their money because a bank fails, banks are still the safest place to keep our savings and treasures.

            sport

In sport the sexes(性別)are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called the weaker sex, or, if men want to please them, the fair sex. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men . A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68.Are womens bodies really weaker?

The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Womens time are always slower than mens, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16.The first‘Tartan’in film was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 49.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone (荷爾蒙)injections(注射). At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complicated(復(fù)雜的) when there are two separate sexes!

1.Women are called the weaker sex because ______ .

A.women do as much as men

            C. Famous Prime Ministers are women .

D.Men can expect to live longer than women in Europe.

            B.dont say this much

C.say this but may not think so

B.Some women athletes are give hormone injections. C.Women and men do not run or swim in the same races.

D.It is difficult to check whether women athletes are really women.

5.In this passage the author implies that ______

Today I’ll be talking about the invention of the camera and photography. The camera is often thought to be a modern invention, but as early as 1727, a German physicist discovered that light darkens silver salt. Used as a camera, a big box was set up, and a small hole was cut in one side to let the light in; he made temporary pictures on the salt. Silver salt is still the base of the photographic film today. Then a French scientist made the first permanent (永久的) picture by using a special piece of metal which was covered with silver salt. A photograph he made in 1826 still exists.

The painter De Gear improved the process (制作法) by covering the metal also with placing the common salt which we can eat. This was in 1839, the official date of beginning of photographs. But the problem was the printing of the photographs. And it wasn’t until other scientists developed the kind of photographic paper we now use that good prints were possible and photography became truly modern. In the 1870’s, Matthew Bradey was able to take his famous pictures in American Civil War. In the 20’s of this century, Georges Mann of the United States simplified film developing (沖洗), and Dr Edward Lane invented the so—called ‘Instant Camera’ which uses self—developing film. If we say photography came into existence in 1839, it follows that it took more than 100 years for the camera to reach its present condition of technical refinement(密度).

            1. What discovery was the basis of photography?

            A. Light darkens silver salt. B. Light darkens natural salt.

            C. Light darkens silver. D. Light darkens self--developing film

            2. How was the first permanent picture made?

            A. By making use of special paper. B. By adding common salt to silver salt.

            C. By giving a slight colour to the silver salt. D. By using a special piece of metal.

            3. What does the speaker regard as the official date of beginning of photography?

            A. 1727 B. 1826 C. 1839 D. 1870

            4. According to the speaker why is Matthew Bradey remembered today?

            A. He was a soldier. B. He took war photographs.

            C. He painted portraits. D. He designed a portable camera.

            5. What did Doctor Edward Lane invent?

            A. A cheap process of developing film at home.

            B. A new kind of film.

            C. An automatic printer.

            D. An ‘instant camera’ that develops its own film.

Members of the working class have blue-collar jobs. They are construction workers, truck drivers, mechanics, steel workers, electricians, and the like. What makes this class differ from the lower class is, first, longer periods of employment--and therefore, more fixed incomes?and, second, employment in skilled or semiskilled (半熟練的 ) occupations, not unskilled ones. Although unemployment hits all levels of the American economy, including those of skilled and semi-skilled workers, it is most common at the bottom of the class structure and increasingly less common at each level upward. They consider themselves to be respectable and hard working and they look down upon members of the "lower" class, whom they often consider to be lazy, dishonest, and too ready to exploit public assistance.

Most people in the working class have at least high school education. Many have some experience of college ( especially community college), though few are college graduates. Unionization has helped the working class, but a rapidly changing economy and frequent periods of high unemployment make it difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly. Purchasing a house for people in this class is extremely difficult, although a certain percentage may receive houses from their parents.(Home-owning rises with social class.)

A greater number of the members of the working class take relatively little satisfaction in their jobs, because much of their work is ordinary and boring. As a result, many seek their main satisfaction in recreational ( 娛樂的) activities. Many members of this class would like to earn enough money to leave their jobs and start their own businesses, though few make it. Many place their expectations on their children, hoping that they at least will rise in the ladder of success, American style.

            1. Which of the following is true about the working class.?

            A. They are often employed as skilled and semi-skilled workers.

            B. They are often offered jobs with high incomes.

            C. They are often considered lazy and dishonest.

            D. They are often exploited by the public.

            2. The underlined word “hit” (paragraph 1 ) roughly means .

            A. strike with a blow

            B. have bad effects on

            C. break up

            3. Most people in the working class .

            A. have difficulty increasing their savings greatly

            B. have at least some experience of college

            C. receive houses from their parents

            D. buy houses by themselves

            4. Many members from the working class are not satisfied with their jobs because .

            A. they could not rise in the ladder of success

            B. they are not interested in their jobs

            C. they could not earn much money

            高考英語閱讀練習(xí)及答案 4

Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that man and animals possess if they are used. If fire didn’t hurt when it burned, children would play with it until their hands were burned away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burnt it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which man and animals might soon die out.

In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.

In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.

In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fear has given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.

            60. Children would play with fire until their hands are burnt away if _________.

            A. they were not well educated at school B. they had never played with fire before

            C. they had no sense of pain D. they were fearful of pain

            61. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because _________.

            A. they have gained experience B. they are warned of the danger and take quick action

            C. they jump out of the way in time D. they are calm in face of danger

            62. What is implied but not stated in the passage?

            A. Too much fear is harmful B. Fear is always something helpful

C . Fear is something that can be avoided

            D. Fear ought to be used as our guide in our life

            63. The best title for this passage should be __________.

            A. No Pains, No Gains B. Pain and Actions

            C. The Value of Fear D . The Reason Why People Fear

Homing pigeons are placed in a training program from about the time they are twenty-eight days of age. They are taught to enter the loft through a trap and to exercise above and around the loft and gradually they are taken away for short distance in wicker baskets and released. They are then expected to find their way home in the shortest possible time.

In their training flights or in actual races, the birds are taken to prearranged distant points and released to find their way back to their own lofts.Once the birds are liberated, their owners, who are standing by at the home lofts, anxiously watch the sky for the return of their entries.Since time is of the essence (本質(zhì)) the speed with which the birds can be induced to enter the loft trap may make the difference between gaining a win or a second place.

The head of a homing pigeon is comparatively small, but its brain is one quarter larger than that of the ordinary pigeon. The homing pigeon is very intelligent and will persevere to the point of stubbornness (頑強(qiáng)) ;some have been known to fly a hundred miles off course to avoid a storm.

Some homing pigeon experts claim that this bird is gifted with a form of built-in radar that helps it find its own loft after hours of flight, for hidden under the headfeathers are two very sensitive ears, while the sharp prominent (突出的) eyes can see great distances in daytime.

Why do homing pigeons fly home? They are not unique in this inherent skill; it is found in most migratory birds, in bees, ants, toads and even turtles, which have been known to travel hundreds of miles to return to their homes. But in the animal world, the homing pigeon alone can be trusted with its freedom and trained to carry out the missions that people demand.

1.What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To convince the reader to buy a homing pigeon.

B.To inform the reader about homing pigeons and their training.

C.To protect homing pigeons against the threat of extinction.

D.To encourage the owners of homing pigeons to set the birds free.

2.According to the passage, what happens to homing pigeons when they are about a month old?

A.They are kept in a trap.

In a time of low academic (學(xué)術(shù)的) achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan,a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents (答問卷者) listed "to give children a good start academically" as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices.Toprepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond,Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.

In the recent comparison of Japanese and American pre??school education, 91 percent of Japanese respondents chose providing children with a group experience as one of their top three reasons for asociety to have preschools. 62 percent of the more individually oriented (強(qiáng)調(diào)個(gè)性發(fā)展的) Americans listed group experience as one of their top three choices. An em??phasis on the importance of the group seen in Japanese early childhood education continues into elementary school education.

Like in America, there is diversity (多樣性) in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential (潛力) development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools.

Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the childrens chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.

            25. We learn from the first paragraph that many Americans believe ________.

            A. Japanese parents pay more attention to preschool education than American parents

            B. Japans economic success is a result of its scientific achievements

            C. Japanese preschool education emphasizes academic in??struction

            D. Japans higher education is better than theirs

            26. Most American respondents believe that preschools should also attach importance to ________.

            A. problem solving B. group experience

            C. parental guidance D. individually oriented development

            27. In Japans preschool education, the focus is on ________.

            A. preparing children academically B. developing childrens artistic interests

            C. tapping childrens potential D. shaping childrens character

            28. Why do some Japanese parents send their children to university-based kindergartens?

            A. They can do better in their future studies.

            B. They can gain more group experience there.

            C. They can be individually oriented when they grow up.

            高考英語閱讀練習(xí)及答案 10

I take the firm position that parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to the best universities. But they must not feel guilty if they cant. If the children really want to go, theyll find a way. There are plenty of loans (貨款)and scholarships for the bright and eager ones who cant afford to pay.

When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them a down payment on a house. They do not have the duty to baby-sit their grandchildren. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor not an obligation.

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.

One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth. A child who is constantly made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that he (or she) wont try at all. Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but its often better to let children learn their mistake by themselves in time. All our parents should do is to trust them, respect them, tolerate(寬容) them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms(批評) are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.

Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.

No child asks to be born, If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.

            9. According to the author, ________.

            A. parents must support their children even after they married as a duty.

            B. if they dont afford, parents should take loans to send their children to go to college.

            C. parents neednt feel guilty if they are unable to send them to university.

            D. parents should give their children a down payment on a house.

            10. The author mainly talks about in this massage________.

            A. the duties of the parents

            B. the best way to teach their children.

            C. the reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.

            D. why parents owe their children something.

            11. What does the underlined word “obligation” mean in the second paragraph?

            A. duty B. debt C. right D. blame

            12. According to the author what should parents do when children make mistakes?

            A. criticize and correct them immediately.

            B. let children learn their mistake by themselves in time.

            C. tolerate them and tell them not to do that again.

            D. compare them with brighter brothers, sisters.

            答案與解析:

            9. C 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第1段第 2 句 If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to the best universities. But they must not feel guilty if they cant

They do not have the duty to baby-sit their grandchildren 可知父母沒有責(zé)任照顧孫子。因此可知下句 If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor not an obligation 如果他們想照顧孫子,要把它看成是恩惠而不是義務(wù)。故答案為 A。

            12. B 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)第4段中的 Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but its often better to let children learn their mistake by themselves in time 可知答案為 B。

Millions of women use cosmetics, often called “make-up”. The cosmetics industry is one of the biggest in the world. Most large stores sell cosmetics, and there are always shops at airports selling them cheaply. The word “cosmetics” refers to anything that people put on their faces to make them look better. Lipstick, face powder and cream, and eye make-up are the most popular. Although more women than men use cosmetics, there are cosmetics for men as well as women.

Some people even have cosmetic surgery to make their faces look different. They have the shape of their noses and eyes changed.

The most widely used cosmetic is probably lipstick, as many women who do not wear any other make-up will often put on a little lipstick.

Lipstick is made by mixing together different oils and colors. This mixture is then allowed to get hard and is cut into the shape of a small pencil. When a woman presses the lipstick to her lips, the end of it becomes soft, and some of it sticks to her lips, giving them extra color.

Cosmetics were probably first used in India, but it was the Egyptians, six thousand years ago, who made the most use of them. Rich Egyptian women painted their eyes green and black. They used a red color to paint pretty designs on their fingernails, the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet. Pictures of Cleopatra always show her wearing a lot of make-up.

The Romans also used cosmetics. They liked to make their skin very white and to paint their eyes. They also used a kind of lipstick.

In England at one time, very rich women had baths in milk to make their skin beautiful. They also used a lot of sweet-smelling powder to stop people smelling their bodies, which were often very dirty because they did not wash very often or change their clothes.

At one time, some cosmetics were not safe. They were bad for the skin, and some of the lipsticks and powders that people used were even poisonous. Nowadays, people in the cosmetics industry take great care to make sure that everything they use is completely safe.

            C. cosmetics were never used on the skin

How long can a person live without breathing? Probably for only four to six minutes. The air we breathe in supplies the oxygen(氧) that is necessary for keeping every part of the body alive. And the brain, which itself controls breathing, is the first to suffer(受苦) if oxygen is lacking(缺乏). If no air enters the lungs(肺), the heart will continue to beat for a little longer, supplying the blood to the brain and other parts of the body. But soon, the supply of oxygen already in the blood is used up.

First, the patient loses conciousness(知覺), because the brain is no longer getting enough oxygen to work. Then lack of oxygen in the heart causes it to stop beating. Without oxygen ,the brain can survive(持續(xù)) undamaged for only about four minutes. The heart may survive for as long as 12 minutes. But within six minutes the person will almost certainly be dead.

1.The oxygen that our body needs comes from________.

            A. the heart is more important than the brain

            B. the brain can continue to work a little longer than the heart without oxygen

            C. the brain stops working before the heart does without oxygen

            D. if a person stops breathing it means he is dead

4.In which order will the following happen without oxygen?

            a. The heart stops beating. b. The brain stops working.

            高考英語閱讀練習(xí)及答案 14

One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good science storybook.I was so interested in the story I was reading that I did not notice that it was getting dark. When I realised it was too dark for me to read easily, I put the book down and got up to turn on the light.Just then I heard someone crying,“Help! Help!” It seemed to come from the trees at the other end of the yard.I looked out but it was now too dark to see anything clearly.Almost immediately I heard the cry again. It sounded like a child. I decided that I should have a look in the yard, just in case someone was in trouble.I turned on the light and found for myself a flashlight and a stick in the room.I thought they might be useful.Armed with these, I went out into the yard.Once again I heard the cry and this time there was no doubt that it came from the trees at the far end of the yard.“Whos there?” I called out as I walked across the yard towards the trees. But there was no answer. With the help of my flashlight, I searched all over that end of the yard, including the branches of the trees. There was no sign of anybody or anything.I came to the conclusion that my imagination was playing tricks on me, probably because of the story I was reading about strange creatures on another planet. Feeling rather foolish about hunting around in my own backyard, I went back into the house and put the stick and the flashlight away.I had just sat down to read my book again when I was frightened by the cry of “Help! Help!” from right behind me.I dropped my book and jumped up.There, sitting on my book was a large green and red bird.It was my neighbours parrot (鸚鵡)! It seemed as if the bird was very interested in the story.

Powerful and mysterious, the wizard(巫師) has been an attractive figure in fantasy literature for as long as the type of literature has existed.Their pointed hats, mysterious ways, and great deeds are familiar to any reader of fantasy literature. They are our childhood heroes and nightmares(噩夢), and many of us grew up with stories full of their adventures.Within the fantasy text, these complex personalities can serve several important roles, taking the part of either the hero, or terrible villain (反面人物).Regardless of the actual role they play within a given story, wizards have several common elements and characteristics that are typical of them. Wizards, in fact, are able to control the world around them through superhuman or magical means. The worlds they live in vary greatly from novel to novel, but the important characteristics of the character type itself remain more or less the same. One of the great strengths of the wizard figure is that nearly any type of character can be one.Authors have created wizards out of men and women of all personalities, backgrounds, and abilities, but although almost any type of person or character in fantasy literature can be a wizard, those who are have several important characteristics in common. Wizards in fantasy literature are rarely static figures. They are almost always driven by some quest (追求) or desire that they use their power to achieve. This is one of the main differences between wizards in fantasy literature and those in the older fairy tales and knightly epics that came before fantasy literature. In folk and fairy tales, which are more focused on the adventures of knightly heroes, the wizards often serve as no more than a plotfurthering device, giving the hero a quest to pursue and equipping them for the trials they eventually face. But in fantasy literature, the wizards themselves can play the role of hero.

            高考英語閱讀練習(xí)及答案 17

How did your friendships begin? Most start with a short conversation on a random day.Asking about a homework assignment in class or complaining about your sore legs after playing in a soccer game, you found your best pal by accident. “Small talk is where all your relationships begin,”Forbes magazine summed up. The following is a fivestep guide to making small talk from Bernardo J.Carducci, the director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast,US.Lets have a look.

            1.Getting started

Begin by talking about the setting, such as the weather outside or the room you are in (“Its cold in here, isnt it?”).The purpose of talking about the setting is to show the other person that you are willing to make a conversation. 2.The personal introduction

You should mention something about yourself, such as your name.A good personal introduction helps move the conversation forward. 3.Looking for topics

At this point, you and your conversation partner need to find common

ground. This is a good time to ask questions or to refer back to things youve said or heard earlier.Dont worry if it gets quiet. The other person is probably just thinking of something to say. 4.Expanding the topic

The goal is to keep the conversation going. At every stage, you should be careful not to talk too much. But dont let the other person dominate(支配) the conversation either. If that starts to happen, mention something about yourself when he or she takes a breath. 5.A polite ending

When ending a conversation, let the person know youll be leaving soon, express gratitude for the conversation and set the stage for a future conversation. For example, you could say,“I really must be going soon, but I had a great time chatting with you.I really liked hearing your opinion about that new movie.Heres my phone number.Call or text me if you know of any other movies you think I might enjoy.”

1.According to the article, starting by talking about the setting is meant to .

            A.find common ground

            B.impress the other person

            C.make the room warmer

D.show your eagerness to make a conversation 答案:D

解析:推理判斷題。根據(jù)文章第四段“The purpose of talking about the setting is to show the other person that you are willing to make a conversation.”可知談?wù)摥h(huán)境是一個(gè)很好的表達(dá)你想要交流的`契機(jī)。

2.What is the reader advised to do when making small talk? A.Turn the conversation to your advantage. B.Never cut in when the other person is talking. C.Do whatever you can to avoid quiet moments. D.Focus on topics both sides are interested in. 答案:D

解析:推理判斷題。根據(jù)文章第六段“At this point, you and your conversation partner need to find common ground.”可知。

3.When ending a conversation, youd better . A.talk about how much you want to keep talking B.show that youve not enjoyed the talk

C.mention a specific movie that you love

D.give your opinion about the other persons earlier comments 答案:A

            解析:細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)文章最后一段可知,在你即將離開前,要先給予對方暗示,同時(shí)還要傳遞“我很想把本次談話延續(xù)下去”的意思。故A項(xiàng)符合。

4.The main purpose of the article is to .

A.encourage students to make more friends at school

B.give students tips on making small talk

            答案:D

            解析:寫作意圖題。根據(jù)文章第一段可知這是寫給學(xué)生看的。再結(jié)合第一句話“How did your friendship begin?”可推測作者的意圖是向?qū)W生介紹如何建立友誼。

Vienna-In spite of Iraq’s decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11- nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC)will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided Tuesday in Vienna.

The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization’s president, Charkid Kheria of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable, so quota increases were not necessary.

The E.U. Commission has expressed concern about Iraq’s output stop. A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.

Saudi Arabia’s Oil Minister Ali Al-Nuaimi had earlier said there would not be any shortfall of oil in the market. The organization had already taken steps to fill the gap, he said. OPEC Secretary General Ali Rodriguez added that the period of Iraq’s output stop was not known, so other exporters were not going to lift quotas yet. If the market was destabilized (使……動(dòng)搖), a suitable response could be made.

Iraq on Monday stopped shipments of crude oil to protest against the U.N. North sea oil was at 29.26 dollars Monday evening.

OPEC wants the oil price to stay within a margin of 22 to 28 dollars and achieved that with cuts in January and March that reduced 2.5 million barrels per day off quotas(配額).

            C. they can have a discussion about the effects of Iraq’s temporary output stop

            D. they can make up their minds to increase oil production

            20. The main idea of the passage is ________.

            A. the oil prices in the world were stable though Iraq has stopped oil deliveries
