            Bicycle Commuting

I may not be a movie star, best-selling author, or millionaire when Igrow up,but one thing I will be known for, at least locally,is commuting by bicycle. Is sad to see how few people do even though many could. Lots of people eagerly campaign for the reduction of greenhouse gases, but by driving cars, theyre sill contributing to the problem.

You might be picturing me as an extreme environmentalist (環保主義者),but Im not one

of those teenagers who wear shirts that say "Help save the world: Recycle." Actually,my interest in exercise, health, and fitness led me to cycling.

Cycling can help you lose weight, improve your health, and prevent many diseases. Cycling also carries a relatively low chance of injury.

While being good for your body, bicycle commuting is also a great way to cut greenhouse gases.

Many environmentalists recycle, plant tees, and drive hybrid cars (混合動力汽車),but bicycle commuting could be even more effective than all of those combined. You could cut down the amount of greenhouse gases just by commuting by bicycle a few times a week.

Bicycle commuting saves money too. When you buy your bicyde and the things that usually go with it. You might be shocked by the cost. But if you think about the increasingly high gas prices, you will know for sure that you can save a significant amount each year by not driving a car.

You might think that you dont have time for bicycle commuting Actually. you probably do.

You could cut back on your TV time and pick up this activity. It helps you care for the environment , save money, and most importantly get fit.

He responded that it all came from an experience when he was about two. He hadbeen trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip (緊握) and it fell, spilling (打翻) the milk alI over the floor.

When his mother came into the ki tchen, instead of yelling at him, or punishing

him, she said, ”Robert, what a wonderful mess you have made!”Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to play in the milk for a few. minutes before we clean it up?”

Indeed, he did。After a few minutes, his mother said,” Rober, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up. So,how would youlike to do that? We could use a sponge (海綿) or a towel, Which do you prefer?" He chose

the sponge, and together they cleaned up the spilt milk.

His mother then said,“You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in, how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Lets go out in the, back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it" The litle boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.

The scientist remarked that it was then that he knew he didn t need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, mistakes were just opportunities for 1 earmi ng something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the

            一、閱讀判斷(第1~10題,每題1分,共10分)

Lacking in Self-Esteem (自尊)? Good for you!

According to psychological and educational theories, self-esteem is essential for a successful life. Generations of children, especially minority kids, have been educated according to the theory that they lack self-esteem, and that this deficiency is central to any problems they may have in making their way in the world.

Well, guess what? A new research has found that self-esteem can be just as high among grade D students and drunk drivers as it is among Nobel Prize winners and former presidents. In fact, people with high self-esteem can engage in far more anti-social behavior than those with low self-esteem. “We used to believe that high self-esteem would cause all sorts of positive consequences and that if we raised self-esteem, people would do better in life,” a researcher said. “Mostly, the data have failed to support that.” Racists, street thugs (惡棍) and school bullies (惡霸) all have high scores on the self-esteem tests. And you can see why. If you think you’re highly gifted, you’re particularly offended if other people don’t treat you that way. So you hit out or commit crimes to defend your pride. After all, who are they to suggest that you could be doing something wrong? What do they know?

Self-esteem can also be an educational concern. College teachers are constantly complaining about the high self-esteem of their students. When every grade in the school is assessed so as to make the kid feel good rather than to give an accurate measure of his work, the kid can develop self-esteem dangerously unrelated to the truth. When he’s told he is getting a C grade in college, he can then get deeply offended or extremely angry. Weak professors give in to the pressure – hence, grade inflation, which results in their students’ vague touch with reality.

            Organic Farming

During thousands of years of huma civilization, the raising of animals and growing of plants have always been organic. Chemicals for farming first came up at the turn of the 20th century. Widespread use of chemicals began after World War II. In the 1950s and 60s farmers started using chemical fertilizers and pesticides (殺蟲劑). Recently, however, more and more farmers have been returning to organic farming.

In organic farming, farm products are produced in more natural ways. Crops, meat and other food are produced without chemicals. Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and growth hormones (激素) are forbidden. Farmers enrich the soil with natural fertilizers. They pull out weeds by hand. Hay and straw are put between the rows of plants to stop weeding. They rely on the natural enemies of pests to control pests. Animals are fed organically and can eat grass outdoors. Cows, for example, are kept in pastures (草場) and fields. Vegetables and fruit are also produced with organic methods.

Organic farming enjoys many advantages. For example, crop rotation can preserve the good qualities of soils. The growing of different crops can keep soils healthy and fertile. Organic farming is healthier for farm workers, and there are fewer remains of chemicals in food. In the long run, organic farms save energy and protect the environment. It can slow down global warming and reduce the pollution of ground water.

Meanwhile, there are some disadvantages. Organic food is more expensive. Organic products may cost up to 40% more. Production costs are higher as farmers need more workers, and the land output is much less. Marketing and distribution is not efficient because organic food is provided in smaller amount. Crop illness may happen very often. Besides, organic farming cannot produce enough food for the world’s population to survive. This could lead to starvation in countries that can produce enough food today.

Health Benefits of Honey with Milk

Honey and milk get along well. Since ancient times, this mix is known for its amazing health benefits.

            (1) Take a glass of honey with milk before you set out for your day in the morning, and you are guaranteed enough to get through the morning rush. Milk provides you the proteins required while honey helps you get the energy by breaking down these proteins. No wonder this drink is meant for all ages alike.

            (2) Milk is known for providing calcium (鈣), which, in right levels, helps in preventing bone diseases as we age. Research has indicated that honey does a good job of carrying nutrients (營養成分) in the food through the blood to various parts of the body. In particular, honey helps in the absorption of calcium, the vital part of milk.

            (3) If you ask doctors or your grandmother for a solution to your sleeplessness, you are bound to get the same answer –– a glass of warm milk with honey. It is best known to induce sleep. So take it regularly if you have sleeping problems.

            (4) Milk and honey not only help in preventing aging by keeping the skin glowing, but also improve your body as a whole as they contain antioxidants (抗氧化物). These help keep the body young and flexible. For a very long time, this has been an open secret in keeping your body look and feel young.

            (5) Both milk and honey are known to ward off harmful bacteria in our body, but their combined strength is more effective in achieving this effect. Cough and cold can be prevented by taking this drink regularly. It also aids in digestion and treating bowel disorders.

What Happens When You Stop Exercising

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you stopped exercising?A new study on twins was published in the journal Medicine & Science. The results of the study are dramatic.

In the study, researchers looked at 10 pairs of twin men. Each set of twins was in their mid-30s.Each had been brought up in the same family. Since they were identical, they shared the same DNA. They had maintained the same level of physical activity for most of their lives. But there was one difference. One twin of each set had cut on exercising in the past few years due to work or family pressure. On average, the less active twin exercised less than twice a week, while the active twin exercised at least twice a week. The research team put each twin through a set of medical tests to study their overall health.

The results showed big differences. While the more active twins had lower body fat percentage, better endurance level, and normal sensitivity, the inactive twins had about seven more pounds of body fat, worse endurance, and signs of disease. Not only were their bodies different;their brains were different as well. The active twins had more gray matter(the information processing part of the brain), particularly in areas that control balance. The conclusion of the study is clear. Quitting your fitness routine can bring negative effects to your body and your brain as well. Considering the less active twins in the study had become couch potatoes(沉溺于看電視的人)only recently, these changes can sneak up on you a lot sooner than youd think. So keep exercising. It is beneficial to your overall health!

The Kid That Saved His Dad

On a sunny day last April,Bode, then nine, and his father,John Taylor,54,were snowmobiling around the remote country of Lake Tahoe. As they were driving on the snow,a little dry branch jammed in the brake of Johns vehicle.Unable to slow down,John rushed toward a pine tree.He moved to jump off the vehicle before it crashed, but his pantleg (褲腿) caught underneath it.John felt his leg broken. As he sank six inches into the powdery snow, he could tell his arms and shoulder were injured too.Bode rushed to dig out his father, but John stopped him. They had no water, little food, and no cell phone service."Get on your snowmobile,"John told Bode."Follow the road, and try to find help."

After a 20-minute ride,Bode spotted a tour group and asked the guide radio for help. The rescuers quickly appeared on the scene. And Bode led them through the white wilderness to his dad,who was pale and in pain.

While they were waiting for a plane to send John to the nearest hospital, the rescuers quickly stabilized his leg.An hour later,he received surgery for the broken, leg and internal bleeding.

Today,Johns leg has healed enough for him to take Bode out on dirt bikes.Father and son now carry extra devices on their trips, including a two-way radio withan emergency button."Im still a little afraid to go out on a snowmobile,"says Bode."Butm starting to feel better about it."

Tisha Shaw,Bode’s mother, says her sons courage and quick thinking have led her to treat him as more of an adult. She lets him stay up later at night because"I trust his judgment," she says.

            B: False

            C: Not Given

答案:B解析:錯誤。原文說的是一根干枯的小樹枝卡在了John的雪地摩托的剎車上,而不是John的雪地摩托壞了。因此選項“Bode’s snowmobile brokedown on the way.”是錯誤的。

Although some surfers have been skateboarding for more than 50 years, skateboarding did not peak until the 70s. In 1962, a surfer attached roller skate wheels to a board and began selling the skateboards to other surfers. The surfers used this new device to practice “surfing” while not in the water. They improved their balance and technique and had fun while practicing.

In 1973, another California surfer designed a skateboard with plastic wheels. The new wheels were stronger and made less noise. At this time, real skateboards were designed and tricks and moves were developed by skateboard lovers. In many of the tricks, skateboarders seem to resist gravity for an instant but they actually use gravity to make their tricks work.

Skateboarding works best on paved areas such as parking lots. In the 70s and 80s, paved areas with a good downhill slope attracted a growing number of skateboarders. Due to complaints about noise and accidents involving skateboards and pedestrians, skateboarding was banned in many cities. Responding to the need for entertaining skateboarding, some communities built skateboard parks. In recent years, skateboarding has become more popular than ever before.

What is responsible for the fame of skateboarding? Gravity. Teens love to experiment with the forces of gravity. Any object with mass has gravity. Gravity gives us “weight”. More significantly, gravity causes acceleration or in skateboarding terms, “speed” when moving downward from a hill or ramp(坡道). When skateboarders are standing at the top of a ramp or hill, their weight is transformed into kinetic(運動的)energy as the skateboarder takes off down the hill. Gravity accelerates the skateboarder downhill. Gravity is what keeps the skateboarder moving and it is also what keeps skateboarding swift and exciting.

            60. What do the first three paragraphs mainly tell us about skateboarding?

Now 16 years old, Kelsey has her cow—Iris, a 6-year-old Jersey with a silky tan coat and soulful brown eyes. She also has established Fort Bantam Creamery, a one-cow dairy based on a self-designed and profitable cow-share program.

Kelsey’s Fort Bantam Creamery customers purchase a share of Iris for $15, and then pay a fee to Kelsey ($3.50 per half gallon of milk) to board, care for and milk that share of the cow. At $3.50 per half gallon, Iris’ milk is about double the cost of milk from grocery stores in the area, but no one is complaining. One of Iris’ shareholders drives more than 100 miles round trip to get the milk, on top of paying a $15 ferry toll.

Kelsey had her own ideas for Iris’ care. She says she wanted her cow to be grass-fed because milk from grass-fed cows is higher in carotene(胡蘿卜素)and vitamin E than milk from grain-fed cows. In part, that’s because fresh grass has more of these nutrients than grain. Another factor behind the high nutrient content is that a grass-fed cow produces less milk than a grain-fed cow, and because any given cow has only a set amount of vitamins to transfer to her milk; the less milk she produces, the more vitamins are in each glass.

“One thing that people should know before they get a dairy cow,” Kelsey says, “is that they take a lot of your time.” Kelsey milks Iris by hand twice a day, 305 days a year. When Kelsey started, she says, it took her about 45 minutes to milk the cow; today, she gets the job done in less than half that time. Having a cow to milk every day also means little time off. “If you do go on vacation,” Kelsey says, “you have to get someone to do the milking for you, which is not as easy as getting a neighbor to watch your dog or cat.” When she goes away, Kelsey is fortunate to have a cheese-making friend, Charlene Osman, who gladly milks Iris in exchange for the milk.

            64. Which of the following is TRUE according the passage?

            A. The nutrient content of milk has little to do with the cow’s food.

            B. Now Kelsey does the milking as skillfully as Charlene Osman.

            C. Charlene Osman can gain the milk without paying Kelsey a fee

            D. Jersey is a kid who wears a silk coat and has emotional eyes.

            65. What does the underlined word “Shareholders” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

            B. People who take care of Iris when Kelsey is away

We often think that our affairs, great or small, must be tended continuously and in detail, or our world will fall apart, and we will lose our places in the universe. That is not true, or if it were true, our situations would be so temporary that they would have disappeared anyway.

Once a year or so I give myself a day away. On the eve of my day of absence, I inform my family and close friends that I will not be reachable for twenty-four hours; then I turn off the telephone. I turn the radio to an all-music station, preferably one which plays the comforting golden oldies. I sit for at least an hour in a very hot tub; then I lay out my clothes in preparation for my morning escape, knowing that nothing will disturb me. On the morning I wake naturally, for I will have set no clock. I dress in comfortable shoes and casual clothes and leave my house going no place. If I am living in a city, I wander streets, window-shop, or gaze at buildings. On the getaway day I do not want to know my name, where I live, or how many responsibilities rest on my shoulders. I hate meeting even the closest friend, for then I am reminded of who I am, and the circumstances of my life, which I want to forget for a while.

When I return home, I am always surprised to find some questions I sought to avoid have been answered and some problems I hoped to flee have become settled in my absence. A day away can drive away anger, transform indecision, and renew the spirit.

Every person needs to take one day away, a day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are dealt with, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.

            68. On the getaway day, the author __________.

            A. leaves home without telling anybody

            B. enjoys doing anything as she likes

            C. leaves her house but reaches no place

            D. hates all the circumstances of her life

            69. With a day away, the author __________.

            A. has to work harder to make up for the lost time

            B. has found solutions to those unsettled problems

            C. has successfully avoided seeking questions

            D. finds herself feeling relaxed and refreshed

            70. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?

            A. We need to learn to ignore others’ care.

            B. Worries in life won’t leave us automatically.

            C. If we don’t care for others, nor will others care for us.

            D. We need to face up to any problems arising in life.

            71. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?

            A. Whatever affairs we have, we must take them seriously.

            B. Whoever we are, we deserve equal rights to enjoy ourselves.

            C. Wherever we go, we should remember to renew our spirits.

            D. However occupied we are, we need to take some time for ourselves.

Passwords consist of a unique sequence(一連串)of characters — letters, numbers, and symbols — required to access personal banking information, secure buildings, computer networks, certain Web sites and more. Each password is different, and only the correct one allows the right of entry.

Before you can choose a password, however, you must know the types of passwords required. First find out if all letters must be lowercase(小寫字母). Should the password consist of letters or numbers only, or are special characters permissible? What is the minimum and maximum length allowed? Your password should be something you can easily remember but something impossible for anyone else to decode or guess. Poor choices include names of people, family or fictional characters, common sequences such as QWERTY on the keyboard or 789456123 on the numeric keypad. Other inappropriate choices include your telephone number or birth date, your middle name, your parent’s name, your street name, or any other familiar name or number.

The best way to choose a password that is hard to decode, yet easy to remember, is to select something memorable from your past. It could be the name of your grandparents’ dog when you were 5 (tippy5). You could form a string of characters using the first letter of each word in a phrase or saying that makes sense to you. For instance, your mother might say, “The sun is shining — So am I.” A password from this saying might be (TsisSaI) or (Tsis-SaI). Once you have created a good password, keep it safe. Do not store it in a computer or leave a handwritten copy where others might see it. You could put the number in your address book in a masked form. It is not likely that anyone who found Ted Williams, 35 N. Sheldon Ave. in your address book would know it contains your password (TW35NSA).

It is best to have different passwords for each system. Since access to sensitive information could open the door for criminals, it is wise to change your passwords frequently. Some authorities suggest changing passwords every three months.

            72. Suppose Michael Greenberg, who was born on December 31, 1978, is a workaholic. His mother Catherine Evans often reminds him to balance work and relaxation by saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Then which of the following could possibly be the best choice of a password for Michael Greenberg?

            A. awanpmjadbB. 12311978

            C. michaelgreenbergD. catherineevans

            73. How is the third paragraph mainly developed?

            A. By making comparisons.B. By giving examples.

            C. By listing points.D. By making classifications.

            74. The example of Ted Williams, 35 N. Sheldon Ave. is used to show _______.

            A. a good passwordB. a secret address

            C. a masked formD. a handwritten copy

            75. According to the last paragraph, what is especially important for a password?

            A. Access.B. A certain system.

            C. Authorities’ advice.D. Safety

Disappointment is natural and normal, and everyone will experience it to some extent in their life. Sometimes life deals us a difficult hand, and events and trials arise that we have no control over. Other times it is our own actions themselves that cause our trials. Regardless of the nature of our trials, disappointment is part of life’s journey and how we deal with it will largely determine the quality of our life. Here are some steps to help us to make our journey more enjoyable.

Firstly, redefine our rules. It is assumed that everyone has an internal “rule” in their mind. If our internal rules are too perfect, then they will discourage us greatly. For example, if we have a rule that says we need to be perfect, it is likely that we will spend a large amount of time feeling sad and disappointed. So when we feel disappointed, it is wise to review and redefine our rules. Want an example of an encouraging rule? Try this one: I am happy and I am successful since I have made my greatest efforts.

Secondly, remind ourselves now and then of the reasons why we are seeking the very goal. As a matter of fact, there are many cases where we have forgotten our original purposes along the way. So it is of great help to remember the reasons why we are committed to a path in the first place when we feel down. By revisiting those reasons, we will likely renew our commitment and not get hung up on the disappointment of the moment.

Thirdly, think about our larger vision and recommit to it. Disappointment is merely a setback on what will eventually be a great and inspiring journey. So when we have those momentary setbacks, it is helpful to think about our larger vision and recommit to it. In our larger vision, therefore, a disappointment is a very valuable experience, which serves as a good educator and makes us more able to meet the challenges of the future.

Finally, reset and have a new start. Resetting and starting anew prevents us from abandoning ourselves to self-pity and forces us to get up and move forward. Don’t live in the past. Take what the past has taught us and keep moving. Wake up the very next day as if our whole life is ahead of us and we have the chance to start fresh. Nothing that happened in the past can stop us from creating the life that we have always desired or from accomplishing the goals that we are seeking.

W: Hi, Bob. I haven’t seen you for a long time. How’s it going in your new school?

W: Yes, I have a reservation at a hotel. The address is One Beach Road. Can you tell me the best way to get there?

M: Excellent choice, madam. You are staying at the best place in Singapore. To get there, you can take a taxi, or the subway also stops very nearby. From the stop, you’ll just have to walk several minutes to the front desk. But once you check in, the doorman will help you with your bags.

W: OK, the subway, and then a short walk. Thanks a lot.

So you’ll still be doing three hours but it’ll be broken up by lunch. And I’d better warn you that the group are really active. So come prepared with a lot to keep them going. They like doing things rather than just listening so make sure you come with plenty of activities. Ring me back if you’ve got any questions. I’m not at home or in my office today. W: Are you a student or…

M: I’ve just started work actually. I’m teaching maths.

W: Oh, yes? And do you use the public swimming pool regularly?

M: About once a week, I suppose, though it might be less in winter.

W: Uh-huh. And how about the cost? Are the charges reasonable?

M: Well, I can afford them, but I think they’re a bit too high, really. Especially for school kids and families.

W: If there could be some other sports facilities, do you have any opinion about how that should be paid for?

M: I think the Sports Committee can get help from local businesses.

W: Well, thank you for your help.

            M: That’s OK. Bye.

            Text10

When I was at university I was friendly with a girl named Alice who came from a very wealthy family. We were both in the same French class and we used to study together quite often. Anyway, at the end of the term, this poor girl failed her French and several other courses. She was so upset that she made herself quite ill and her parents decided to take her on a trip to cheer her up. And they invited me to go along too. It was a real expensive ship going from Southampton through to the eastern Mediterranean. I’d certainly never had an opportunity like that before----and I don’t suppose I ever shall again. Well, my main memory of that holiday is boredom. Alice was getting better but was still too low to want to talk much or to do anything except sleep. We had amazing trips on the shore every second day or so but otherwise we were at sea with nothing much to do except sit on the ship and eat meals. The average age of the other passengers was at least sixty and I hadn’t even taken much to read.
